Just Saw "The Color Purple" Last Night!! 😁😁 (My Movie Review)
WOW! Where do I even begin?? First of all, let me just start off by saying that I LOVED this movie! I really enjoyed it. 😃 You just knew that you were in for a wonderful ride when you heard the opening number to this film. I love musicals just in general, but there's just something extra special about seeing black talent, black voices, and black actors dancing, singing, and acting onscreen. 🥰 The whole entire film was a magical moment for me, and a sense of great pride. Sort of like the feeling I got when I saw "Black Panther" in theaters for the first time. 😊
I will say too that this film was very well shot. I kept being in awe of the cinematography, the camera angles, the vibrant colors, the use of lighting, the gorgeous shots of Georgia, etc. It was so very well done. You can tell that they spent a lot of time, hard work, and energy on this film to make it very special and of high quality. 👌🏾
I also loved how this film kind of had a stage/theater feel to it. You can tell that it was a musical theater play before it hit the big screen.
The Music The MUSIC!!! Oh the music!!! 🎵🥰 I've never seen the stage play musical, so a lot of the songs were new to me, but I liked a lot of the songs that were in the film. I also loved how they kept some of the original songs that were in the original 1985 film, like "Miss Celie's Blues (Sister)", and "Maybe God is Tryin' to Tell You Somethin'". 😊
The Acting The acting was very well done. I felt like everyone pulled their weight and there weren't any "weak links" in the cast at all. Halle did amazing....I think she has a great career ahead of her in acting if she keeps it up. Danielle Brooks...Omg she was AWESOME. I almost feel like she stole the show in some scenes lol....
Colman Domingo did a great job. I think Danny Glover was a bit more unlikable in the original film, but Colman is a very good actor, and I felt like he did a great job in this role.
I love my girl Taraji! She is SO very talented! Her voice is really great too. While I was watching the film, i couldn't help but remember everything she was saying on the press tour regarding unequal pay in Hollywood, and anytime I saw her onscreen I just couldn't believe that someone with her great talent still feels like she has to fight and scrap to just get a smidgen of what other actresses get in HW, and how she's always having to start right back at the BOTTOM. Smh...it's really sad. 🤦🏾♀️ Fantasia Barrino....OMG.... Like, I remember this woman on American Idol!!!! I am so proud of her and how far she's come. 😊 She did an AMAZING job in this! She thoroughly deserved her Golden Globe nomination. 👏🏾 She probably won't win, but she definitely deserved her nomination. I always feel like when someone has to not only act but also sing, dance, (or even play a musical instrument) onscreen, they usually are doing WAY more "work" than others who are just having to simply "act" onscreen lol. I will go to my grave saying that. But! I know this year is a pretty tight race for the "Best Actress" category, so, if she doesn't win, then it is what it is. 🤷🏾♀️ Just being nominated is an honor.
The Pros:
This is more like a pro AND a con (I'll explain)... But the fact that they cut out a lot of stuff from the original movie kind of made the story move a lot quicker, and I appreciated that!
I liked that the film didn't feel AS heavy as the original 1985 film. The film still had a lot of heavy elements in it (don't get me wrong), but you don't get to experience just HOW heavy the film is because there's a lot of singing and dancing, and they kind of gloss over certain things in the story (imo). This is actually probably a good thing, especially for a film coming out during the Holiday season lol.
The acting was superb.
It seems that they added a few more things to this film that was in the original book by Alice Walker, so that was a nice touch.
The Cons:
I liked how they cut stuff from the film, but at the same time I didn't lol. I'm so glad that I saw the 1985 version FIRST before seeing this version, because I think there would have been some elements that I wouldn't have fully appreciated because I didn't have the context. The 1985 version is pretty long and more slow-moving, but I felt like it added way more depth to everything that was taking place in the story. The 2023 version almost banked on the fact that you've probably already seen the 1985 version, and they didn't spell everything out for you...which, again...imo was a good thing and a bad thing at the same time lol. I can't explain it.
OVERALL SCORE: 8/10
Overall, very well-done movie! Loved the acting, loved the music, loved basically everything! 😊

The results of the 2024 Bafta film awards will not be revealed until Sunday night, but one outcome is already certain: there will be no British winner of either best actor or best supporting actor.
This is because no UK performers have been nominated in these categories – the first time since 1976 this has happened in the same year.
Ireland is represented on both shortlists, however, with Barry Keoghan (for the film Saltburn) and Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) among the nominees for best actor, and Paul Mescal (All Of Us Strangers) in the running for best supporting actor.
A win for either Keoghan or Murphy would mark the first time an Irish-born performer has picked up the Bafta for best actor...
One of the people up against Mescal for best supporting actor is Robert De Niro, for his role in Killers Of The Flower Moon...
Two of this year’s nominees for best actress are non-white: Fantasia Barrino, for The Color Purple, and Vivian Oparah, for Rye Lane.
If either of them win, they will make history.
Oparah is one of just five UK acting nominees this year, along with Carey Mulligan (best actress, Maestro); Emily Blunt (best supporting actress, Oppenheimer); Claire Foy (best supporting actress, All Of Us Strangers); and Rosamund Pike (best supporting actress, Saltburn)...
British filmmaker Christopher Nolan could win his first ever Bafta, for his work on the blockbuster biographical drama Oppenheimer.
Nolan is nominated for best director and best adapted screenplay, besides getting a nod as a producer in the category for best film.
Up against Nolan for both best director and best adapted screenplay are fellow UK filmmakers Andrew Haigh (for All Of Us Strangers) and Jonathan Glazer (The Zone Of Interest)...
The film with the most nominations at this year’s awards is Oppenheimer with 13, followed by Poor Things (11), Killers Of The Flower Moon (nine) and The Zone Of Interest (nine)...'

The Color Purple 2023
I have waited for this movie to come out on Blu-ray so I can see it for myself. Sadly Blu-ray and physical media have become scarce so when I saw it available for digital download I went ahead and got it. Big box stores please keep digital media. Anywho.
I’ve heard that it was a terrible movie. I didn’t go to see it in the theater because the last time I was in a theater two women talked through the entire movie while using their cellphones. So when movies drop I no longer have a desire to see them in the theater so I watch them in the privacy of my own home. Anywho.
This film, is absolutely beautiful. The cinematography, is beautiful. The casting on point. The detail is eye opening. The story is masterfully executed. The differences between the two are numerous. But the genetic makeup is still the same. The scene highlights are the same as the original film but they are played differently in my opinion to better illustrate the deeper plot lines of the book.
Taraji L. Henson can sing sing!!!
Fantasia Barrino can act act!!!
The supporting cast are absolutely fantastic.
I enjoyed this film tremendously. I believe you will enjoy it as well.
Keep an open mind.

The Color Purple
This was good. I usually don't like musicals; some are unbearable, looking at you in the heights, but the music was excellent.
Also, thank you for casting actors who can Act and sing.
Everyone was so good. Fantasia deserves all that praise she's getting alongside Danielle, Taraji, and Coleman.
I'm so happy Danielle is finally getting the recognition she deserves, since the Emmys decided to play nasty and wasn't nominated for Orange is the new black.
The movie didn't feel long, and the pace was very fast, I didn't expect that.
The direction was kinda questionable sometimes.
Also, I’m honestly surprised that I didn't know this has a wlw plot right there in the center of the stories. Two black women loving each other is not that aesthetic I guess.
Fantasia Barrino not getting an Oscar nomination is so insane to me

National Association for the Advancement of Colored People; NAACP (Social Media Post)
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is a civil rights organization that was founded in 1909 by W.E.B Du Bois, Ida Wells-Barnett, Mary White Ovington and others and is concerned with the challenges facing African-Americans, especially following the 1908 Springfield Race Riots. Since its inception in 1909 the NAACP has been responsible for a number of civil rights advancements like the Civil Rights Act of 1957 and 1964, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the Fair Housing Act of 1968. As discussed in class the Fair Housing Act was a national movement but a big portion of the protests where a part of the March on Milwaukee campaign in the 1960s. The NAACP was the main organization that was handling and conducting protests in the Milwaukee area. Today, the NAACP and its followers focus on promoting the achievements of people of color while still spreading awareness for the civil rights issues that exist today.
This post by the NAACP on November 30, 2023 is a great example of how the organization spreads awareness through advertising the accomplishments of people of color. In this post we see the actress Fantasia Barrino Taylor on the cover of Elle magazine and the caption reads, "Black women gracing the cover of @elleusa's 2023 Women in Hollywood issue." There are many posts like these on the NAACP Instagram page and I think it is very important to showcase the achievements of people of color because it is another step towards a multicultural society.
This post by the NAACP on November 7, 2023 is in response to the jury verdict surrounding the officer responsible for the death of Elijah McClain. McClain was a 23 year-old black man who was killed by police in Aurora Colorado while he was walking home from the convenience store on August 30, 2019. Throughout this class we have talked a lot about the injustices and violence towards black people in America but I think that Peggy Mcintosh and her invisible knapsack summed it up best to me. What stood out to me while reading more about Elijah McClain was one of the invisible privileges from Peggy Mcintosh's Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack, that privilege being, "I can travel alone without expecting embarrassment or hostility in those who deal with us" (Mcintosh). because I'm white I have never had to be fearful of a simple traffic stop or encounter with the cops but that can be very different for people of color. I think spreading awareness about the injustice of McClain and others like him is incredibly important and is necessary if we want to see any true change and organizations like the NAACP are pivotal in getting the word out.

The Barbie outrage, even tho it was nominated still, just screams entitlement to me. I understand being upset about the snub but all these sympathetic statments are just too much. If people weren’t making all these statements, then it wouldn’t be annoying. It’s like they killed the excitement for everyone else. Including Lily Gladstone, which is such a big win.
I haven't even really been spending time online on Twitter much since the Oscar Nominations dropped, but I'm kinda like "whatever" about it because like I said, I don't really think anyone from the "Barbie" cast should have received Oscar nominations for any acting awards. 👀
I wouldn't mind Greta getting a Best Director nod since I thought what she did was smthg new, different, and innovative, but I don't feel overly strongly about it either way.
I'm more so SHOCKED about Fantasia Barrino's (and "The Color Purple"'s) snub tbh. 🥴 But I guess the Best Actress category is stacked this year? 🤷🏾♀️
But hey, if ppl wanna be outraged about Margot and Greta, then that's their choice? 🤷🏾♀️
I guess white women are having their "Oscars So Male" moment the way we as black ppl had our "Oscars So White" moment years ago rofl 🤭🤣 😂
Like I said, I'm not too triggered cuz I wouldn't have given Margot the nomination anyway.
But ppl can feel however they wish to feel?

My Top 10 Options on who could have played Nina Simone
TI seem to being doing these a lot lately but because I wasn’t happy with the casting of Zoey Saldana being Nina Simone as most of us probably weren’t happy here is a list of people who I feel could have played Nina Simone.
10. Michaela Coel
She is a great actress and she is the dead ringer to Nina Simone in my opinion but I just don’t feel she is a strong enough singer which is why she is why she is higher on the list but she is a great poet and we could always just dub her singing.
9. India Arie
India Arie is on this list because she is an amazing singer, and her music is pretty much what Nina Simone stood for. Be proud of your dark skin, features and India Arie has the right look. However, she higher up on this list because I have never seen her act in anything. So, it is pretty much the opposite of my previous person I chose to put on this list.
8. Danielle Brooks
She is an amazing singer and actress. She has broadway experience, she has done the broadway show “The Color Purple as the lead character Sophia, has done a voice on Tangled the series and her acting well most of you know her as Natasha “Tastee” Jefferson from orange is the New Black. Oh and I would love to see her in anything other than those prison scrubs.
7. Fantasia Barrino
She is a winner of American Idol, she also starred in the Broadway show the color purple and she is really talented. I don’t have much to say about her other than she has talent and would have played Nina Simone well
6. Cynthia Erivo
She has broadway experience as well she is an amazing singer. She played Harriet Tubman in the movie Harriet. I think it would be cool to see her in more lead films and see her flex her talent muscles. Acting and singing and she is very talented at both. She would Fit Nina Simone so well!
5. Ledesi
She is an amazing singer! She sang a duet with Adam Lambert and has a powerful voice! I think I am not sure on her acting skills but I know she has a power voice.
4. Alfre Woodard
She is a very versatile actress and she is so expressive! She has a great deal of experience under her belt, she played the mom, to Monica in Love and Basketball, she was in the netflix series Luke Cage, she played Aunt Joesphine in the new version A Series of Unfourtanate Events and she has been in a pletora of things and if I were to name all those we would be here forever lol!
3. Viola Davis
This woman is a multi talent. She is an amazing actress and singer. She is a Juliard Graduate and has lots of Broadway experience and I believe she once said someone calle her the Black Meryl streep. Her acting experience include, the show How to Get Away With Murder, she starred in the following movies, The Help, Fences, Suicide Sqaud and she played the biological mom of Antwone Fisher in the movie Antwone Fisher. I know she can sing and if she played Nina Simone it would be a great way to show her singing talents as well as her acting talents.
2. Lauryn Hill
She has such strong powerful voice and she is amazingly talented. She is more of a singer than actress but from what I have seen she excells at both. She was in Sister Act 2 Back in the Habit which is the movie she is mainly known for. Not to much else to say about her but it would be fun to see her flex her acting muscles again.
1. Uzo Aduba
She is a multitalent. She can sing dance act and ice skate. She has an incredible singing voice. Most people recognize and know her best as Suzanne Warren aka Crazy Eyes from Orange is the New Black where starred along side with Danielle Brooks. She has also starred in things such as Miss Virgina where she plays the mom in that movie, she played Glinda the Good Witch in the 2015 Broadway Production of the Wiz (BTW that is far Superior to the Diana Ross version which was terrible) and she also played the mom in Beats! Even though I think Viola Davis and Afre Woodard are slightly better actresses than Uzo I placed her at number one because she is very versatile, she has an amazing voice, and I think she and she has shown a good balance between her singing and acting. I also think she can do both equally well. As I said about Danielle Brooks it would be nice to see her in something other than those Prison Scrubs!
These women are all beautiful, talented and the best part is that more dark skin women get jobs and no one has to be painted darker to be the correct skin tone and no prosthetics needed to make their features look more Afrocentric because they all ready come that way and theire features are beautiful! Honarable Mentions: Audra McDonald. Jennifer Hudson
Update: I know I keep editing this post but I have officially decided to to replace Audra McDonald at number five with Ledesi. Her singing voice feels better suited for Nina
